They’re performing Friday night at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, and Saturday, in a special free show (although you have to have advance tickets) at the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa.

I first saw the GirlyFolk open for the Indigo Girls (what is it about this “Girl” theme?).

That night the Indigos seemed tame and boring compared to the Girlys. The trio really seemed to enjoy being with each other and playing off the harmonies and themes presented. Aside from a little nasalness from (I think) Nate, I find Girlyman wonderful and musical, quirky and interesting.

The first song I fell in love with was their cover of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”. I loved how they slowed it down and each took a piece and made it their own. Ty, Doris, and Nate are a treasure together. They work the harmonies like a perfect cappuccino, just the right amount of foamy hot milk and just the perfect design on top. Add a bit of cinnamon and chocolate to peak the flavors and you have Girlyman!

I’m looking forward to speaking to them about touring and spending hour after hour with the same faces. Don’t they get sick of each other? Will they last longer than the Beatles?

We all got into the country mood, wearing Kitty Rose bandannas and our finest boots. Shelley was sportin’ a genuine Kitty Rose hat that was a prize from a previous concert. Covered in black sequins, it turned into the hat no one in the studio could resist trying on. And, actually, it may have been bewitched, as some people took on whole new personae while they were wearing it. Witness Alisa’s Dwight Yoakum moment, above right.

Kitty wasn’t sharing her real hat, which — she pointed out — is genuine beaver. (Uh, naturally…)

Kitty sang us a whole passel of tunes, including “Where the Heck is Hopland?”, “Ira’s Song,” “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad,” “Is It Hot Down There?” (we all agreed it was!) and her inspiring cover of Loretta Lynn’s “You’re Not Woman Enough to Take My [Wo]man”.

Additionally, we played some of the great music Kitty brought along with her, including tunes by the smokin’ band Blame Sally, and other artists included on the recording “Songs From the Land: A Celebration of the Hopland Women’s Festival”, including “A Cowgirl’s Love Song” by J. Byrd Hosch, complete with yodeling.

We also heard a cut by Kitty’s friend and ripping banjo player Woody Simmons, who is also on the Hopland Festival cd, called “Ashtavakras”.

(Okay, maybe that same woman in boots and a good felt hat, too. If she’s wearing a rainbow bandanna, we’ll swoon!)

I visited the studio last night to meet with Shelley about our plans for the first Shelley-Suzi co-hosted Outbeat Salon music show.

When I arrived, I found Shelley engineering an Outbeat interview with Dossie Easton, author of The Ethical Slut.

Interviewer Thyme S. Siegel did a great job of keeping her cool, but those of us hanging around the studio were ready to jump out of our chairs with questions. We would have liked this conversation with the woman who created the classic manifesto of sexual liberation to go on all night!

Afterwards, we took a few minutes to share stories and I got to tell her about the couple who tried to seduce me by emailing me excerpts from her book. Our friend T was so enthralled with her autograph to “A most excellent slut” that she says she plans to frame it and hang it over her bed.
