Shelley here. Suzi and I are going to interview Girlyman for Outbeat this Sunday.
They’re performing Friday night at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, and Saturday, in a special free show (although you have to have advance tickets) at the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa.
Be sure to turn and hear our show live, at 8 p.m. Sunday night. Directions for streaming the show are in the link at the right of this post.
I first saw the GirlyFolk open for the Indigo Girls (what is it about this “Girl” theme?).
That night the Indigos seemed tame and boring compared to the Girlys. The trio really seemed to enjoy being with each other and playing off the harmonies and themes presented. Aside from a little nasalness from (I think) Nate, I find Girlyman wonderful and musical, quirky and interesting.
The first song I fell in love with was their cover of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”. I loved how they slowed it down and each took a piece and made it their own. Ty, Doris, and Nate are a treasure together. They work the harmonies like a perfect cappuccino, just the right amount of foamy hot milk and just the perfect design on top. Add a bit of cinnamon and chocolate to peak the flavors and you have Girlyman!
I’m looking forward to speaking to them about touring and spending hour after hour with the same faces. Don’t they get sick of each other? Will they last longer than the Beatles?
Tune in Sunday night for the real deal — their voices, and their songs.
Listen to our studio interview with Kitty Rose, and hear the show here. There’s lots and lots of live music. We’ve broken it down into segments for your listening pleasure:
She even encouraged – or rather tolerated – us singing along. (Note to all of us: Audience participation may sound better when there’s more than three people in the studio!)
In the interview, she talks about the legend of Sandy Saunders, part of the album’s tongue-in-cheek theme, and makes reference to the Sandy Saunders website. You can see it here.
Kitty Rose darn near brought the studio down, stomping her foot and singing her heart out Sunday night. We’ve gotta tell you, this Rose is no shrinking violet. She filled up the room, airwaves, and bandwidth with her laughter and music. Calls came in from as far away as Florida and New Mexico, and as close as right down the road in Cotati.
(Rumor has it the show was so rowdy that, in greater downtown Cotati, you could hear it without a radio.)
We all got into the country mood, wearing Kitty Rose bandannas and our finest boots. Shelley was sportin’ a genuine Kitty Rose hat that was a prize from a previous concert. Covered in black sequins, it turned into the hat no one in the studio could resist trying on. And, actually, it may have been bewitched, as some people took on whole new personae while they were wearing it. Witness Alisa’s Dwight Yoakum moment, above right.
Kitty wasn’t sharing her real hat, which — she pointed out — is genuine beaver. (Uh, naturally…)
Kitty sang us a whole passel of tunes, including “Where the Heck is Hopland?”, “Ira’s Song,” “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad,” “Is It Hot Down There?” (we all agreed it was!) and her inspiring cover of Loretta Lynn’s “You’re Not Woman Enough to Take My [Wo]man”.
Brokebutch jokes aside, we’ve always been suckers for the whole western gestalt. After all, is there anything sexier than a bluesy-voiced woman poured into a pair of well-faded jeans?
(Okay, maybe that same woman in boots and a good felt hat, too. If she’s wearing a rainbow bandanna, we’ll swoon!)
Join us this Sunday night at 8 p.m. west coast time for a live radio broadcast with Kitty Rose, a genuine out-and-proud Queen of Country Music. She’ll be talking to us, playing us some live music, and sharing some of her favorite cuts by other artists.
If you’re not in the KRCB broadcast zone, the link on the right will tell you how to hear us live on the internet. Give yourself a little time before the show to get all hooked up. Then get your pardner to pull your boots off and sit back and enjoy the show. If you’re so moved, call in to double your fun!
Shelley and I met for dinner tonight at a restaurant owned by friends, and took a moment between courses to compare our current playlists. We thought it might be a good idea to share them with you:
Here’s a couple of Blame Sally treats for you. The first is their awesome war protest video to their song “If You Tell A Lie” (this one has me in boot heaven), and the second is a live Bay Area performance, a rockin’ sing along, Blame Sally style.
While I have to say, I’m loving Chris Pureka’s new cd “Dryland,” there’s something about the song “Porch Songs” from her debut cd, “Driving North” that just makes me want to sit down, crack open a cold one, and sing along. Check out this live performance:
Finally, we’ve got to leave you with Kirsten Price’s video of her rocking anthem, “Freedom”. Yowza!
Interviewer Thyme S. Siegel did a great job of keeping her cool, but those of us hanging around the studio were ready to jump out of our chairs with questions. We would have liked this conversation with the woman who created the classic manifesto of sexual liberation to go on all night!
Afterwards, we took a few minutes to share stories and I got to tell her about the couple who tried to seduce me by emailing me excerpts from her book. Our friend T was so enthralled with her autograph to “A most excellent slut” that she says she plans to frame it and hang it over her bed.
……………………………
The show’s musical soundtrack was the rocking Pansy Division. What better way to celebrate the energy in the room than with “Fem In A Black Leather Jacket” and “I’m Going to Be A Slut”? Check out their video of “I Really Wanted You”:
